- Francisco de Paula Rodrigues Alves (1848–1919) – the President of Brazil, who has just been re-elected for a second term, and who could not even take part in the inauguration due to illness
- Guillaume Apollinaire (1880–1918) – French poet, critic and artist
- Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) – Austrian symbolist painter
- Niko Pirosmani (1862–1918) – Georgian artist
- Max Weber (1864–1920) – philosopher and historian, one of the founders of sociology
Famous people who survived the Spanish flu
- Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881–1938) –the first president of Turkey; after his illness, he lived for almost 20 years; the cause of death was liver cirrhosis caused by alcohol abuse and excessive exercise
- Walt Disney (1901–1966) – artist and director, founder of the world-famous animation film production company; died of lung cancer caused by constant smoking
- Mohandas Mahatma Gandhi (1869–1948) – National Hero of India; killed by firearms during the attack
- Franz Kafka (1883–1924) – German-speaking writer; he survived the flu, but after recovering his health deteriorated – Kafka suffered from tuberculosis, from which he later died
- Edvard Munch (1863–1944) – Norwegian symbolist painter; lived for 80 years
- Mary Pickford (1892–1979) – American film actress; she was not yet 30 years old at the time of her illness; died at the age of 87
